Shari’s Launches New Branding Design on Three Fronts: Remodel; Website and Menu

Beaverton, OR May 28,2014

Shari’s Café & Pies has launched a series of design initiatives that contemporize their brand. In the last 30 days Shari’s released their new website, a new menu and completed an extensive remodel one of their restaurants.

“We’ve been modifying design and branding elements on all fronts over the past few years. Shari’s is a heritage brand that our team has been working to contemporize while maximizing our core brand strengths of Simply Great Food and Friendly Service. This is the most significant movement we’ve taken in that direction to date”, said Bruce MacDiarmid, CEO & President of Shari’s. He continued with describing the new designs as embracing Shari’s northwest roots and commitment to providing fresh, regional and seasonal products alongside their award-winning pies. “The remodel, website and new menu all genuinely evolved from our northwest heritage. We have a rich history in the region and we celebrate it with a distinct northwest flavor that is defined with these new initiatives”.

The new remodel design features colors and materials that reflect a more contemporary appearance while remaining true to its ‘local’ neighborhood restaurant appeal. Natural woods and stone replace the original design that was developed in the 70s.
The new website and menu focus on local and fresh and seasonal flavors and products

Shari’s Wins Oregon Governor’s Sustainability Award

The Oregon Sustainability Board and Business Oregon will honor Shari’s Restaurant Group for their commitment to sustainable business practices at the Northwest Environmental Conference & Tradeshow on December 10th.

Shari’s was recognized for their commitment to developing restaurant-wide programs to reduce waste, decrease energy and water consumption.

Bruce MacDiarmid, Shari’s CEO & President, states that Shari’s has increased its commitment to environmental responsibility over the years.  “Since 2008 we have reduced our total electricity usage by 6%, gas usage by 7% and water consumption by 19%”, he said.  “But it’s not just about saving dollars.”  MacDiarmid continued, “It’s about being a good corporate citizen in the communities we serve.  Our guests in the northwest expect businesses to be environmentally conscious.  And we’ve been on the leading edge of those expectations.”  In addition, Shari’s purchases coffee beans from the Rainforest Alliance Certified Farms and recycles and converts cooking oil into biodiesel fuel.

“I’d like to commend these businesses for their efforts to keep Oregon at the forefront of the national movement  towards sustainability,” said Secretary of State Kate Brown, who is the chair of the Sustainability Board.

In 2006, then Governor Ted Kulongoski issued an Executive Order directing the Oregon Economic and Community Development Department (now known as Business Oregon) to establish an awards program to promote and advance the use of sustainable practices in government and the private sector.

5 Reasons The Thirst For Water Technology Will Grow In 2014

5 Reasons The Thirst For Water Technology Will Grow In 2014

Certain companies, such as beer makers Anheuser-Busch InBev and MillerCoors, have invested in serious conservation measures for years. Yet periods of drought and concerns over the energy-food-water nexus have made water a far greater topic of concern in board rooms and city halls.

Ideas for improving access are at the center of some notable corporate social responsibility initiatives. In October, for example, a coalition of companies led by Coca-Cola pledged to deliver up to 2,000 off-grid water purification systems to developing regions.

Like energy, water is a universal issue: every facility, product, community and person is touched by it somehow. As the United Nations notes: “Water scarcity is both a natural and a human-made phenomenon. There is enough freshwater on the planet for 7 billion people but it is distributed unevenly and too much of it is wasted, polluted and unsustainably managed.”

Reversing that trend will take a serious annual investment: almost $840 billion, or $1.8 trillion over the next 20 years, estimates the U.N. University Institute for Water, Environment and Health (UNU-UIWEH). The good news is that this could deliver almost $3 trillion in economic, environmental and social benefits.

“As we approach some planetary tipping points, and resulting irreversible changes, innovative perspectives and paradigm shifts are necessary,” said Nikhil Seth, director of the division of sustainable development at the U.N. Department of Economic and Social Affairs.

Which tipping points will matter most to your business? Here are five factors driving the urgent need for better global water efficiency.

Shari’s Partners With Meals On Wheels

Shari’s Cafe & Pies today announced that its October Fundraiser raised over $25,000 for Meals-on-Wheels Centers around the Pacific Northwest and beyond.
The promotion provided a incentive of a Free Slice of Pie to any guest who donated a Dollar or more to their local Meals on Wheels Centers. The promotion raised funds for the Meals-On-Wheels organizations throughout the Pacific Northwest, wherever Shari’s has a location.
“Many of our guests are seniors, so making a donation to Meals-On-Wheels was a natural choice for us,” said Michael Kiriazis, Vice President of Marketing for Sharis. “Our award-winning pies are second-to-none. We knew if we tied a slice of pie to a donation with a strong charitable cause, that our guests would support the promotion.”
“Shari’s is an outstanding partner,: Joan Smith, Executive Director of Loaves & Fishes stated. “The generous $25,000 donation will be used to feed home-bound seniors and sustain some of our key programs.”
This is just one of the many charitable promotions Shari’s organizes throughout the year. Over the past 10 years, Shari’s has donated over $2 million to the NW Charities.

Ecova Celebrates Shari’s Energy Efficiency Recognition

Last week, my colleagues and I had the pleasure of attending the 2013 BetterBricks Awards, an event honoring industry leaders in sustainable building. Our client, Jodenne Scott of Shari’s Restaurant was presented an award for the Building Management category.

BetterBricks is a commercial building initiative of the Northwest Energy Efficiency Alliance with a goal to accelerate the adoption of energy efficiency best practices among building professionals. The BetterBricks Awards are presented to “standout individuals who lead the way in building, designing, operating and advocating for high-performance commercial buildings in the Northwest,” and Jodenne was a perfect candidate for the award!

With the majority of its restaurants in the Northwest, Shari’s is a staple of family dining and those who love pie! What is less known about Shari’s is their commitment to energy and water reductions. In 2008, Jodenne began working with Ecova to reduce resource consumption at Shari’s restaurants. Since the initial engagement, Shari’s has reduced its overall energy consumption by 8.5% and its water use by 17%. They achieved these impressive reductions through a commitment to continual investment in resource efficiency upgrades, staff training, and tracking and measuring their progress. Jodenne has overseen the installation of several projects including lighting upgrades, ENERGY STAR® equipment, irrigation control systems, and electric car charging stations.

Jodenne’s ingenuity, strategic implementation of measures, and savvy for acquiring utility incentives has created an ingrained resource efficiency program at Shari’s that promises to add to their savings well into the future. Congratulations, Jodenne – well done!

Shari’s, America’s Best Freeway-Exit Diners

Portlanders rarely miss a chance to feel their hearts swell with civic pride, especially when it comes to unfancy food. While our upper tier is only what a city of our size and wealth requires—we have the same small allotment of Noisettes and Genoas found in Denver, Nashville or Cleveland—we’ve mastered the middle of the spectrum. You can get a thoughtfully prepared meal made with fresh ingredients anywhere in town, and our reputation for creative, affordable fare bleeds over even into long lines for doughnuts topped with children’s cereal and “farm to cone” ice cream made with corn syrup.

So it’s odd that we’d miss something to brag about. And yet America’s best regional diner chain goes unheralded in our midst.

Have you been to Shari’s lately? Well, the Beaverton-based restaurant chain celebrates a happy 35th birthday this year. And I wish it many more…
