Ecova Celebrates Shari’s Energy Efficiency Recognition

Last week, my colleagues and I had the pleasure of attending the 2013 BetterBricks Awards, an event honoring industry leaders in sustainable building. Our client, Jodenne Scott of Shari’s Restaurant was presented an award for the Building Management category.

BetterBricks is a commercial building initiative of the Northwest Energy Efficiency Alliance with a goal to accelerate the adoption of energy efficiency best practices among building professionals. The BetterBricks Awards are presented to “standout individuals who lead the way in building, designing, operating and advocating for high-performance commercial buildings in the Northwest,” and Jodenne was a perfect candidate for the award!

With the majority of its restaurants in the Northwest, Shari’s is a staple of family dining and those who love pie! What is less known about Shari’s is their commitment to energy and water reductions. In 2008, Jodenne began working with Ecova to reduce resource consumption at Shari’s restaurants. Since the initial engagement, Shari’s has reduced its overall energy consumption by 8.5% and its water use by 17%. They achieved these impressive reductions through a commitment to continual investment in resource efficiency upgrades, staff training, and tracking and measuring their progress. Jodenne has overseen the installation of several projects including lighting upgrades, ENERGY STAR® equipment, irrigation control systems, and electric car charging stations.

Jodenne’s ingenuity, strategic implementation of measures, and savvy for acquiring utility incentives has created an ingrained resource efficiency program at Shari’s that promises to add to their savings well into the future. Congratulations, Jodenne – well done!

Shari’s, America’s Best Freeway-Exit Diners

Portlanders rarely miss a chance to feel their hearts swell with civic pride, especially when it comes to unfancy food. While our upper tier is only what a city of our size and wealth requires—we have the same small allotment of Noisettes and Genoas found in Denver, Nashville or Cleveland—we’ve mastered the middle of the spectrum. You can get a thoughtfully prepared meal made with fresh ingredients anywhere in town, and our reputation for creative, affordable fare bleeds over even into long lines for doughnuts topped with children’s cereal and “farm to cone” ice cream made with corn syrup.

So it’s odd that we’d miss something to brag about. And yet America’s best regional diner chain goes unheralded in our midst.

Have you been to Shari’s lately? Well, the Beaverton-based restaurant chain celebrates a happy 35th birthday this year. And I wish it many more…

Shari’s Cafe & Pies proudly accepted Four Gold Medals at the 2013 National Pie Championships in Orlando, Florida last month. Amateur pie makers, professional bakers/chefs & commercial pie companies from around the country & Canada have been competing at the NPC since 1995.
Shari’s took home the Gold Medal for three Pies, all in the Premium Category:

  • S’Mores Galore
  • Fresh Blueberry Lemon Sour Cream
  • Tropical Coconut Cream
  • Banana Cream Dream

“Shari’s has a history of making the best pies in the Northwest”, said Kevin Bechtel, Sr. Vice President of Menu Development. “And our guests have always recognized the quality of our pies. We always knew that our pies could compete with the best in the country. But these awards validate that we can compete…and win”.
This was Shari’s third trip to Orlando in which they brought home the gold from the National Competition. In 2010, Shari’s won Gold Medals for the S’mores Galore and Montana Cherry Pies. In 2012, Shari’s won three gold medals: Oregon Marionberry, Peach Perfection and Sour Cream Lemon.
“We’re elated with these wins”, Bechtel said. “We knew that our commitment to using only the finest Northwest ingredients made our pies competitive with any pies in the country.”

Shari’s Café & Pies presented Bobbi Hite, Principal of Crestline Elementary School with a check of $5,066 as a fundraiser to help the rebuilding process for the school, which was struck by a fire on February 3rd.
Shari’s held a fundraiser in its four Vancouver Area restaurants in the month of February, in which they donated $1 from every whole pie sold. The result was over $5,000 raised for the school.
“Shari’s has always been a proud supporter of the schools in our communities”, said Kevin Bechtel, Sr. Vice President at Shari’s. “Many of our guests and employees were devastated by this tragic Fire. Donating a buck from every pie sold was our way of giving back to the schools”.
