Shari’s Restaurants starts the New Year with a fresh face, Stan Frankenthaler, who was recently named Executive Chef and Senior Vice President of Supply Chain for the company. Frankenthaler will oversee and implement their new Northwest Fresh menu, as well as all other culinary aspects of their 92 locations.

Bringing his extensive experience from CraftWorks Restaurants & Breweries, Dunkin’ Brands and Whole Foods, Frankenthaler is well-placed to apply his background in assisting Shari’s with their overall brand refresh.

“As a kid, everything we ate was seasonal, and when I worked at Jasper’s I shopped our neighborhood in Boston’s North End daily for seasonal ingredients and daily specials … we offered ‘farm to table’ before our industry developed it as a tagline,” said Frankenthaler. “I believe in a guest-centric and on-brand balance, with a large helping of community involvement, and am thrilled to join the Shari’s team.”

“It is exciting to welcome Stan Frankenthaler to our Senior Management Team. As Executive Chef and Senior Vice President of Supply Chain, Stan will be filling a critical gap in our ability to successfully grow our brands. Stan’s extensive knowledge, industry experience, professional skills and successful career are well-known within the restaurant and hospitality industries,” said Sam Borgese, Shari’s CEO. “I couldn’t be more pleased to have Stan on our team.”

Frankenthaler has received multiple James Beard Foundation award nominations and an organizer and presenter at Research Chefs Association and the World of Healthy Flavors.

On November 10, 2018, Shari’s re-opened its doors at its Halsey Crossing location with a complete brand refresh. This is the first in a series of restaurant renovations that will become the next generation of Shari’s in 2019. Led by CEO Sam Borgese, it is part of the Beaverton, Oregon based chain’s revitalization plan.

Sam Borgese Shari's CEO

Sam Borgese, Sharis CEO

In an effort to take the 40-year-old family-dining chain to be more relevant to today’s consumers, Borgese and his team developed Shari’s 2.0, a reimagined restaurant design and enhanced menu item.

Now guests will experience a new open interior design that complements the upgraded heritage architecture and new Shari’s signage. In addition, the kitchen redesign created higher efficiency in food preparation and improved speed of service by 40%. The team also designed a separate area exclusively dedicated to delivery orders to reduce guest confusion while improving guest service.

The biggest unveiling was the menu redesign. Older slow-selling menu items were replaced with exciting new Northwest Fresh entrees, including a new line of savory pies, melts, and open-faced sandwiches. Shari’s is known for its “comfort food” and as Borgese put it “Going into savory pies was natural” for them.

In addition, Borgese stated, “We faced extreme deadlines to meet our opening schedule, and the success of Shari’s first renovation could not have happened without the highly collaborative effort orchestrated by teams of experts in architecture and interior design, menu strategy, operations, engineering, and marketing in collaboration with our internal management team.

Every contributor played a vital role in ensuring that Shari’s future expansions and renovations will proceed smoothly and with great success.”

PORTLAND, OR – OCTOBER 5, 2018 – Shari’s Restaurants, Carrows Restaurants, and Coco’s Restaurants and Bakery, are thrilled to announce that between the three brands, the restaurants have raised over $62,000 during its Hunger Action Month Campaign that aims to end hunger in local communities. This effort, according to Feeding America statistics, helped feed up to 620,000 people. This month-long campaign was in collaboration with 24 local Feeding America-affiliated food banks throughout the Pacific Northwest, California, Idaho, Arizona, and Southern Nevada. While Shari’s is not new to feeding the hungry through larger Feeding America food banks, like the Oregon Food Bank, this initiative marks the first of many multi-state efforts that Shari’s Management Corporation will make in the years to come to help feed millions of individuals – the most vulnerable being children and the elderly – who are food-insecure.

“Hunger strikes every community we serve so it is especially gratifying for me to see that our guests recognized this community need and responded to our Hunger Action Month fundraising efforts, which turned out to exceed our expectations,” said Sam Borgese, CEO of Shari’s Management Corporation (SMC). He continued, “Ending hunger is a passion of ours and we will strive to contribute all we can to end hunger and limit the amount of food waste in our industry.” John Iannucci, SVP of SMC Operations, agreed that the restaurant teams in all of their SMC brands recognized the need to do their share to end hunger: “Although our restaurant servers were the tip of the spear that raised the funds,” he said, “it was a full-restaurant team effort that produced such exceptional results. I couldn’t be more pleased with their initiative and engagement during this campaign.”  Borgese mentioned that his teams are collaborating to find additional ways to safely distribute restaurant food surpluses to those in need and that Shari’s Management Corporation is also planning several team volunteer events to help distribute food to those who are food-insecure.

Shari’s Management Corporation thanks all of their guests and friends that shared in their effort to combat hunger during Hunger Action Month. To learn more about Shari’s and its other efforts, please visit, /.

Shari’s Blossoms Again at 40

Portland, OR – October 9, 2018 – Shari’s Management Corporation (SMC), which operates 93 Shari’s Restaurant locations throughout the Northwest, plans to launch its first in a series of renovations beginning with its Shari’s Halsey Crossing location at 1453 NE 181st Street, Gresham, OR 97230. The Grand Re-Opening festivities will begin with a ribbon-cutting ceremony starting at 9:00 am on Saturday, November 10, 2018.

Shari’s guests can expect some exciting changes in store: completely new interior design, improved Northwest fresh menu offerings, new uniforms, and updated exterior color schemes and signage.

Leading up to the Grand Re-Opening on Friday, November 9, from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm, all high school students will receive a free food item when they show their High School ID. Ten percent of all meals sold on Friday will benefit Gresham’s Boys and Girls Club’s Arts Program. On the official Grand Re-Opening Day on Saturday, November 10, a variety of family-fun activities will include: children’s performances, local school musical performances, a Shari’s pie-box design competition submitted by local artists, and special prizes will be awarded to those guests who would love to sing or dance for the crowd. In addition, a raffle will be held with some amazing prizes such as: an iPhone X, concert tickets, “Beats by Dre” headphones, free pie for a year, and more. For guests who dine in, everyone will win a prize through “Spin-to-Win” opportunities upon check-out. At 5:00 pm, the Raffle and Pie Box Design winners will be announced and local musicians will perform. The day promises to hold a little fun for everyone.

Shari’s first renovation is an exciting evolution for, not only the Gresham/Halsey Crossing location, but for all of Shari’s 93 Restaurants which will undergo transformations within the next few years. Sam Borgese, CEO of SMC, explained, “Our goal as part of this renovation is to initiate ongoing, consistent community support that carries with it our pride in our Northwest suburban roots. It’s our way of remaining connected locally and it is also our way of saying ‘thank you’ for supporting us these last 40 years.”

Shari’s new wave of ongoing community support will be part of its ongoing “Shari’s Cares” campaigns which will benefit local causes. SMC’s most recent initiative, its Hunger Action Month Campaign, raised over $62,000 benefitting local food banks located near all of its restaurants. Another way Shari’s will support its communities is to offer public school grants for the arts. Borgese added, “As we all know, arts programs are often the first casualties that suffer from school-budget cuts. Our latest initiative is our “$20,000 Shari’s ‘Let the Music Play’ Music Education Grant” which will be awarded and disbursed to qualifying local Portland area schools that are in need of extra music program funding.”

Borgese continued, “Our Halsey Crossing Grand Re-Opening is our way of ensuring that our guests feel that – from every touchpoint – their dining experience matters to us and that their meals are flavorful, plentiful, and perceived as a great value. We also want our guests to feel that they’re dining in a friendly, comfortable environment that conveys our pride in our community and the thoughtfulness we have for our guests.”

Shari’s invites all of our guests – old and new – to join us at the Halsey Crossing Grand Re-Opening on Saturday, November 10, 2018 from 9:00 am until 8:00 pm.

Shari’s Restaurants Improves Performance throughout 2018

Great things are happening at Shari’s Restaurants these days. In addition to exciting improvements planned for this fall in restaurant remodels, services, a revamped menu, and branding, the Pacific Northwest family dining favorite is also seeing positive growth as a result of its 2018 financial performance

As hints of the upcoming changes in Shari’s Restaurants circulate, the 40-year old iconic brand has rebounded significantly. Year over year sales increases in 2018 has enabled Shari’s to earn the top spot in competitive rankings over other family dining restaurants regionally in the Pacific Northwest and even nationally throughout the U.S.

>According to Knapp-Track, for the first and second quarter of 2018, Shari’s posted the highest (comp) same-store sales growth while achieving positive guest counts for four consecutive months in the Pacific Northwest and for two consecutive months in the US. While other family dining competitors experienced lesser sales results, with some brands even experiencing slight downturns, Shari’s uptick in sales signals that the initial changes begun over the last twelve months in branding, advertising, service, and menu offerings are starting to yield positive results.

Shari’s CEO, Sam Borgese, stated that “Shari’s impressive growth for the last two quarters is attributable to the teamwork of every one of our 3,500 employees who, over the past year, have been dedicated to regaining Shari’s long-held position as the number one family dining brand in the Pacific Northwest. The added accomplishment of outperforming our larger and more formidable national competitors is also testament to our team’s commitment to deliver superior service and great food at an obvious value to the guest within the communities we serve.”

With these results in mind, Borgese stated, “We are looking forward to continuing our recent success as we share our exciting restaurant remodel and design plans this fall with both our loyal guests as well as our potential new guests. Our goal is to not only heighten our guests’ experiences at Shari’s, but to also integrate some of our new “Northwest Fresh” menu items that will complement our traditional comfort food favorites. And, as always, we will continue to have our award-winning pies on hand for those suffering from a stubborn sweet tooth.”
